Margaret Murry (most often referred to by her nickname "Meg") is one of the main protagonists of the Time Quintet, and the main character of A Wrinkle in Time. Meg is the oldest child of scientists Alex and Kate Murry. She is currently married to Calvin O'Keefe and has seven children: Polly, Charles, Sandy, Dennys, Peggy, Johnny, and Rosy. She has three siblings: her brother Charles Wallace (who traveled with her and Calvin O'Keefe on their first adventure across time and space) and twins Sandy and Dennys.
Information[]
A Wrinkle in Time (book)[]
Meg is below average in most of her school subjects, but brilliant in science and math. She looks up to her mother very much and admires her beauty and intelligence.
It was revealed to Meg in Chapter One that her father and mother had been giving her and Charles Wallace several IQ tests. Before her father disappeared, he assured her that her IQ is "more than okay". It is stated that Meg had picked up on the tests, and she noticed that she and Charles had received more than the twins.
When a boy from her school called Charles Wallace her "dumb baby brother", Meg becomes enraged and immediately engages in a fight with him.
A Wrinkle in Time (2018 film)[]
It is stated by Meg's principal that she used to have top grades and a top attitude before her father vanished. Her grades in school have plummeted since he disappeared, and she rarely speaks to anyone outside of her family.
Personality[]
A Wrinkle in Time (book)[]
Meg is awkward, unpopular, and defensive around authority figures as well as her peers. (She is even called "belligerent and uncooperative" by her school principal.) Although she has the brains to accomplish difficult tasks, she rarely puts her strengths to use.
Along with others putting her down and calling her unattractive and stupid, Meg also considers herself to be dumb. She is very hard on herself and usually takes the blame for almost everything, even if she is completely uninvolved. She calls herself an "oddball" and a monster.
Meg also tends to be very clumsy. In Chapter One, she bumps into a ping-pong table, her old dollhouse, Charles Wallace's rocking horse, and the twins' electric trains.
Initially, Meg is very untrusting of most people. When Charles first brings Mrs. Whatsit to the Murry house, Meg is very unwelcoming and suspicious of her.
Physical Appearance[]
A Wrinkle in Time (book)[]
Like many adolescent girls, Meg is unhappy with her physical appearance. Meg hates her mouse-brown, unruly hair, braces, glasses, and considers herself a "monster" in comparison with her mother. Meg considers herself to be 'unattractive'. She has brown eyes, pale skin, and generally baggy, worn-out-looking clothes.
A Wrinkle in Time (2018 film)[]
In this film, Meg has curly black hair, dark skin, and glasses. She wears her hair down or in a bun with some strands down. Throughout their journey, Meg wears a standard outfit composed of a plaid shirt, a blue, long-sleeved shirt underneath, and a pale purple tee-shirt underneath that. She also wears jeans and normal tennis shoes.
Relationships[]
Time Quintet[]
Charles Wallace[]
Charles Wallace is Meg's younger brother. He is always very caring to her and somehow always knows when she is upset or angry.
Meg keeps him safe, and is very over-protective, always keeping him close. She scolds him frequently throughout the Time Quintet whenever he journeys without her knowing out or peruses danger.
Calvin O'Keefe[]
Calvin is Meg's boyfriend, and future husband.
Calvin is there almost as much as Charles, at her side, there to comfort her. He knows exactly when she's uncomfortable or unsettled and doesn't try to comfort her, but pushes her harder to let her emotions out and be the person she knows she can be.
In several books after the first one, they are mentioned as a married-couple, with children as well.
Trivia[]
